Masterfully developed by Milepost Simulations, this remarkable Train Simulator route re-creates the Black Butte District of Southern Pacific’s Cascade Line, extending 108 route miles between two noted railroad towns, Dunsmuir, California and Klamath Falls, Oregon. Set in 1983 and as part of Southern Pacific’s key rail route between Southern California and the Pacific Northwest, the line is alive with rail traffic and railroading challenges!

Providing the power to tote tonnage over the mountains and across the high plains of Northern California are Southern Pacific’s distinctive EMD SD40T-2 “Tunnel Motor” and the railroad’s classic first-generation EMD SD9E “Cadillac” six-axle diesels.

Constructed by the historic Central Pacific beginning in 1870 and part of the Southern Pacific since 1885, the famed western route climbs out of Dunsmuir, elevation 2,290 feet, following the path of the Sacramento River Valley to eventually reach its 5,063-foot summit at Grass Lake, California. To achieve its ascent of more than 2,700 feet, the line calls upon gradients of over two percent and a renowned double-horseshoe curve south of Azalea, California. Then, once over its summit, the route proceeds under the gaze of towering Mount Shasta as its descends into the scenic Klamath Basin. Today, the line is a key portion of Union Pacific’s “I-5” north-south corridor.

With Train Simulator’s Southern Pacific Mount Shasta route, you’ll experience everything from tough and unrelenting mountain railroading on the southern portion of the line to fast-paced, 60-mph running in the north. And you’ll climb aboard SP’s potent EMD SD40T-2 and much-admired EMD SD9E diesels, the latter of which were nicknamed “Cadillacs” by Southern Pacific crews for their fine riding qualities. The Thameslink Programme, a phrase that London commuters have been familiar with for over a decade, was the radical transformation of commuter travel through the centre of London. The plan? Upgrade and expand the Thameslink network with better cross-city connections, as well as longer and more frequent trains made up of a brand new fleet of rolling stock.

The hunt for new trains started back in 2008, bidders needed to offer trains with a high standard of specifications, and provide new maintenance and storage facilities for the vast new fleet. Ultimately Siemens was chosen, with their Desiro City platform, a development of the Desiro UK range which already existed in the form of the Class 350, 360, 380, 450 and 444.

With the first delivered in 2015, and the growing fleet entering service in 2016, the new Class 700 is a revolutionary EMU. 115 were ordered in a mix of 8 and 12-car formations, doubling the size of the old Thameslink fleet. Each unit is lighter, more efficient, has better performance, and can soak up commuters by their thousands. A new bogie design reduced energy consumption and wear on the track compared to older trains. Each coach is connected with a wide gangway, allowing for better movement inside, a spacious accessible area features in the middle of every unit, the passenger doors are wider and open faster. Air-con in the summer is second to none, and they are fitted with the latest design of passenger information systems which in real-time offer onward travel information and passenger load per coach. It’s safe to say that the Class 700 was the biggest step-change in London commuter rail travel since the introduction of EMUs themselves.

Capable of dual-voltage, 100 mph operation, the Class 700 Desiro City is able to serve a variety of routes both north and south of the Thames, and as such is suitable on a plethora of Train Simulator routes:

La línea entre Leipzig y Dresden se remonta a la década de 1830. Se construyó para unir las ciudades al este de Alemania, una apuesta arriesgada y un salto al mundo del transporte interurbano. La apuesta mereció la pena y la línea gozaba de gran popularidad.

Take to the rails of the complete North Wales Coast Line, from historic Crewe to the picturesque Isle of Anglesey, aboard iconic Transport for Wales and Avanti West Coast traction with Train Simulator’s North Wales Coast Line.

Ever since the Act of Union in 1801, which saw Ireland become part of the United Kingdom, people have strived to improve the connection between the two isles. In the early 19th Century, a combination of horse-drawn transport and sailing ships was the only option; that was until the 1840s, when the Chester and Crewe Railway and later, the Chester and Holyhead Railway were incorporated.

The full line was soon completed in 1848. Irish Mail would regularly work the line from London to Holyhead, and the LNWR, being in control of the West Coast Main Line and the line to Holyhead soon after, saw an opportunity for a spike in tourist traffic. Trains were put on to serve seaside resorts like Rhyl, Colwyn Bay and along the Llandudno branch, setting in stone the line’s popularity. This tale would continue through the Big Four, British Railways and Sectorisation eras, and despite freight being less common today, the line has remained a local and long-distance passenger haven with over 90 trains a day.

Explore the seaside today with North Wales Coast Line: Crewe – Holyhead, featuring the Avanti West Coast Class 221 “Super Voyager”, and Transport for Wales BR Class 158 “Sprinter” and BR Class 175 “Coradia” DMUs.
