This scene was inspired by a personal experience I had while hiking, when we came across a huge fissure next to a route. We climbed down and saw a similar sight to what you can see in this scene (except the buildings and the equipment of course). It immediately occured to me what a good little hiding place could be created here.

Between the high walls of the canyon, the arid air barely moves, there is no wind here, its almost as if time had stopped. Beyond the rocks, a stream of clear water trickles, carving a narrow bed into the hard stone over millennia. On one side of the creek is a long-uninhabited settlement, and on the other is an abandoned mine entrance, deep in the depths, it may hide treasures and secrets or perhaps your end.

The barren wasteland of the stone desert is mostly filled with pebble-sized stones, broken here and there by various rocks, even the size of a building. The air is dry, and there is no trace of rain or water. Magical whirlwinds sweep between the rocks, twisting dozens of pebbles and stones with them, bringing certain death to those foolhardly enough to venture near them.

As you squeeze yourself through the crevice, you see a wall raised by a human – or at least, an intelligent – race. The wall splits into a corridor, one part of which lies in ruins, and the other leads to a vast hall from where new passages open. There is centuries of silence and tranquility in the corridors, and a soft sound of water in the distance.

In the middle of the forest stands a huge tree, its height rivals smaller mountains. Between the branches of the giant tree someone established a small shelter, away from all earthly perils. There is only a single entrance, a lift between the branches. Upon arrival it becomes apparent that small roads along the branches connect several platforms. On the arrival level you can see a small warehouse, some watchtowers, two cages – probably for prisoners – and a branch lined with exploding barrels. Near to the trunk of the tree, there are additional lifts that take you higher among the dense foliage of the tree …

The valley at the foot of the pine-covered mountains is filled with azure glitter by a huge lake as far as you can see. Instead of cliffs, the lake is bordered by a flat, pebble shore in places. These clearings are connected by thin roads winding between the pine forests. On the largest clearing stands an old ruin, part of which has already been flooded.

In Division of Labour, the player takes on the role of The Manager in a developing nation called Auriverde during a world ecological collapse.
The player manages the workforce and machinery of a factory, fulfilling contracts and earning profits for the Overseer Corp. Buying resources, manufacturing goods, managing the workers and facing moral and ethical decisions are the core of the game.

Compassion

The player has the option to make their workers more comfortable to improve efficiency, or pay them more to increase worker happiness. Events may occur where the player can do a favour for a worker, give time off for a holiday or generally try to help them.

Exploitation

However, Overseer Corp always demands larger and larger profits, and so balancing these becomes the core of the game. To make greater and greater profits, more sacrifices will need to be made and corners will need to be cut.

Storytelling

Along the way, the player will be presented with moral and ethical decisions regarding their works and the world at large. Whether it’s simply a worker who needs time of for medical reasons or an earthquake on the other side of the world sending migrants flocking to Auriverde for work and security, there’s always decisions to make.

Legend has it that hidden in the depths of the desert, there is a portal which leads to the land of dragons. The gate was once guarded by dragons, who allowed only those deemed worthy, to enter. The location of the gate is now long forgotten, even the ever-dangerous guardians remain only as withered bones.
