“A walking simulator of Battleship Island before its collapse. A complete recreation of Battleship Island from a time that no longer exists. Explore freely, as if you’ve time-traveled back to those days. Would you like to take a stroll to this special place filled with nostalgia?”
Hashima Island, also known as Gunkanjima, is a small coal mining island located in Nagasaki, Japan. Its appearance, with numerous high-rise apartment buildings, resembles the battleship Tosa, which is why it is also called “Battleship Island.”
Gunkanjima thrived as a coal mining city with cutting-edge urban functions, including elementary and junior high schools, an underground department store, a movie theater, restaurants, a pachinko parlor, and a hospital. However, due to the national energy policy shift, the mine was closed in 1974, and all the islanders left the island.
Today, its unique, retro landscape captivates many Japanese people. In 2015, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
X days have passed since people left Gunkanjima… All the scenery has decayed and transformed. And you, a photographer, have visited this island to immortalize its ephemeral scenery.
